THE CADET
BATTALION
The Corps of Cadets is also known as "The Maverick Battalion"
and it is organized with a cadet battalion
staff element and two companies designated "Alpha" and "Bravo"
companies. The Battalion is completely run by the cadet
chain-of-command with supervision from the cadre. The cadet battalion
commander and his/her staff is responsible for day-to-day operations,
physical training, planning and conducting labs, and the execution of
all the Corps of Cadets events. Each company is commanded by a cadet
captain and replicates the chain of command and rank structure as a
regular Army unit. MS IV's (Seniors) are cadet officers and the cadet
Command Sergeant Major. MS III's (Juniors) are cadet sergeants, MS II's
(Sophomores) are cadet corporals, and MS I's (Freshman) are cadet
privates.
Each Battalion is numbered from the original 1st Battalion in
1902. The Chain of Command is chosen by the Professor of Military
Science with the recommendation of the cadre and the previous cadet
chain of command. Cadet Order-of-Merit-List (OML), performance at
LDAC, APFT scores, commitment to the Corps, and grades, are all factors
considered. The Chain of Command (officers) is appointed the week
or so prior to the beginning of the school year and usually performs
their duties for the entire year. Positions are assigned not only
based on the ranking of the cadet, but are also developmental in nature
to enhance the leadership experience of those cadets assigned.
