Cadet Training

Your Commitment
YOUR COMMITMENT TO THE ARMY

Army ROTC students who receive an Army ROTC scholarship or enter the Army ROTC Advanced Course must agree to complete a period of service with the Army.

  • You can serve full-time in the Army for three years (four years for scholarship winners)
  • Selected Cadets may choose to serve part-time in the U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard while pursuing a civilian career

It's an experience that you can't get anywhere else, and your leadership skills will be challenged every day.  Contact your campus Military Science department for more specific details on your Army ROTC service commitment.

Enrolling in the Army ROTC Basic Course does NOT involve a commitment of service to the Army unless you have received an Army ROTC scholarship.

CONTRACTING REQUIREMENTS

Scholarship recipients and Advanced ROTC cadets must contract to validate their scholarships and/or receive their monthly stipends.  Students are responsible for their university bills (tuition, fees, housing, etc...) until they validate their scholarships.

To contract you must:
     1.  Pass an Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT).  You can do this at anytime after you get awarded your scholarship but not later than the last day of class for the semester.  Call the enrollment officer if you want to do this during the summer before the semester begins.  See the Physical Fitness webpage to find out your requirements.
     2.  Have a valid DoDMERB medical approved to include any remedials and waivers if required.
     3.  Have completed and submitted a Request for Security Clearance.  This is done on the Department computers and is submitted by the Human Resource Assistant.
     4.  Have turned-in a copy of your birth certificate and proof of citizenship
     5.  Have completed the paperwork for direct deposit and DEERS.  The Human Resource Assistant will do this with you.
     6.  Have passed 12-credit hours your last semester in college (not applicable for incoming freshman) with no "F's" and at least a 2.5 GPA.  Your Cumulative GPA must also be a 2.5 in a 4.0 scale.

Once all of the above are completed you will sign your contract DD Form 4 with the contracting officer.

Failure to contract the semester you get awarded your scholarship results in forfeiture of the scholarship.

Advanced ROTC students must contract no later than the second semester of their MSIII year.

Scholarship cadets must maintain their contract eligibility until they graduate and get commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army, Army Reserves, or Army National Guard.  Failure to do so results in the suspension of benefits.  This means that the Army will not pay for your tuition and fees, however, you will continue to receive your monthly stipend.

Cadets who fail to pass 12-credit hours in the semester and/or fail one or more classes and/or fail to attain at least a 2.0 GPA for the semester and/or fail to maintain a 2.0 Cumulative GPA in a 4.0 scale or fail the semester APFT will receive academic probation.  Cadets who receive 3 academic probations can be disenrolled at the discretion of the PMS.  Cadets who receive more than 3 academic probations can be disenrolled at the discretion of the Cadet Command Chain of Command.  Contracted cadets who are disenrolled from ROTC may be required to repay the Army for benefits received or serve in Active Duty for 3-years.

Four-year scholarship cadets do not incur any military obligation until the first day of class of their sophomore year.  However, any four-year scholarship cadet who receives academic probation (and therefore suspension) after both semesters of their freshman year will automatically lose their scholarship.
